The old “Angstl Inn” in Sonnering has been famous for its crispy “pork knuckles” since 1980, when the innkeeper “Edda” invented the recipe and boosted the “Haxn von Sonnering” across the Chiemgau from Munich to Salzburg and even further. It is said that even in New York you can find people who know Edda and the “Haxn von Sonnering”. Munich’s in-people, actors and other famous people as well as players and managers from the soccer club FC Bayern München regularly patronized the “Gasthaus Angstl” and have created quite some funny stories - and history.

Sadly, Edda deceased shortly after she retired with her husband. Since then, a small number of innkeepers have kept up the legend and the delicious “Haxn”. Surprisingly the real estate was put on the market last year, so Clemens and Astrid decided swiftly that they would have to protect this heart of the tiny village Sonnering. Otherwise, the pub would have been torn down and replaced by modern and uninspiring duplex homes, which would have ripped the soul out of this village.

With respect we are now renovating this old postal station and inn (built in 1636) and are currently conducting a complete renovation under the latest standards regarding energy efficiency, sustainability and hospitality. Not unexpected, we are encountering some surprises during the renovation and have become close friends with ancient stones and rocks, that crossed our path during the installations. Every one of them deserves our appreciation, as they have been summoned by poor farmers from the fields in a plague stricken Europe during the thirty year war almost four hundred years ago.

Now, a new roof, new windows from larch wood, a complete new heating system with “Pellets” and heat-recovery ventilation of all rooms will all add to reduce the running costs for the future innkeeper. The three guestrooms and the apartments (either for longer rent or holiday apartments) will be brought to a 4-star-standard with oak wook floors and brand new bathrooms. An unmatched “Gemütlichkeit” is given within the two “urige” parlours with 40 seats each, old wood furnaces and a small party room called “Troadkastn”, where grain was stored in former times.

With the gastronomic facilities being up-to-date, we Have also found a motivated and inventive innkeeper to continue the “Haxn” legend (with a twist) and passionately carry the tradition on to spin the next generation of legends.
