Die älteste überlieferte Urkunde, die die Stadt Luckau erwähnt, stammt aus dem Jahre 1276. Als wohlhabende Stadt wurde sie 1492 zu einer der Hauptstädte der Niederlausitz. Mit dem Prager Frieden 1635 wurde die bis dahin böhmische Niederlausitz sächsisch. Im 30-jährigen Krieg bauten die Schweden die Stadt als Hauptstützpunkt aus; sie erlitt starke Zerstörungen.

Am 4. Juni 1813 wurde in einem Gefecht bei Luckau der Vormarsch französischer Verbände auf Berlin, durch die verbündeten russischen - preußischen Truppen vereitelt.

1815 kam Luckau mit der Niederlausitz zu Preußen. Von 1816 bis 1993 war Luckau Kreisstadt und Anfang dieses Jahrhunderts ein bekanntes Moorbad.

The oldest known document that mentions the city Luckau, dates back to 1276. As prosperous city it became in 1492 to one of the capital cities of the Niederlausitz.With the Peace of Prague in 1635 the hitherto bohemian Niederlausitz became Saxon. During the Thirty Years' War, the Swedes built the city as a main base. It suffered severe destructions.

On June 4, 1813, the battle took place at Luckau. The advance of French troops to Berlin was thwarted by the allied Russian Prussian troops.

In 1815 Luckau and the Niederlausitz belonged to Prussia. From 1816 to 1993 Luckau was a city center and at the beginning of this century a famous moor bath.
