It has long been an insider's tip among caravan owners. Many campers gush that it is the most beautiful place in all of Germany. And this, even though on weekdays from five o'clock in the morning, gravel trucks lumber noisily past the parking area.

The reward for the guests is the breathtaking view of the Kiel Fjord and the canal. There is always something to see. Almost constantly, huge sea vessels come out of, or into, the locks of the Kiel Canal, the world's most frequented trafficked artificial waterway. (More than Panama Canal and Suez Canal combined! Ed.) From submarines to huge freighters to luxury cruisers, the canal-camper gets to see it all.

Nearly 10,000 caravan owners visit Michael Kmoch every year at his lot on the Kiel Canal. He also tries to offer something special for his guests. Once a month, Classic Car fans and friends from all over Germany make a special visit to his lot. On these occasions, there is often live music - and a mug of coffee for 1.50 Euros! He could demand twice the price, but he feels that everyone should be able to afford a bratwurst and a beer. And the low prices attract exactly the unique audience he prefers at the Kiel Canal.

Word of Michael's special hospitality has gotten around. Even in the winter, the mobile campers come to visit. Electrical hook-up, washing facilities, a snack bar - everything is there on site.

But Michael also offers his guests something extra: a bit of culture. He has opened a special museum on the site, a 1950s museum. It's difficult to believe the extent of the items he has brought together. Another project he offers is called "Classic on the Canal". He wants to bring his campers closer to classical music. After all, Michael Kmoch's main occupation is the organization of classical concerts all over Germany. Whether this idea is something that appeals to his campers will only be revealed after the premiere."
