– Initiierung, Koordination und Durchführung von gegenwartsbezogenen Forschungsprojekten zur arabischen Welt.
– Förderung der interdisziplinären und internationalen Forschungskooperation durch Vernetzung wissenschaftlicher Institutionen innerhalb und außerhalb der arabischen Welt.
– Betrieb der bedeutendsten nationalen und internationalen Informationsdienste zur gegenwartsbezogenen Orientforschung durch Orient-Info-Service, DAVO-Info-Service, DAVO-Nachrichten und EURAMES-Info-Service.
– Durchführung und Koordination von wissenschaftlichen Tagungen und internationalen Kongressen zur Arabischen Welt (DAVO-Kongress, World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies u.a.).
– Verbreitung der Kenntnis von der Arabischen Welt in der Öffentlichkeit durch Publikationen, Vorträge und andere Präsentationen in den Medien sowie durch Lehrveranstaltungen am Geographischen Institut der Universität Mainz.

– Initiating, coordinating and implementing research projects on the contemporary development of the Arab World.
– Promoting interdisciplinary research cooperation through networks between research institutions in Arab countries and other parts of the world.
– Operating the most extended international information services on contemporary Middle East studies (DAVO-Info-Service, DAVO-Nachrichten, EURAMES-Info-Service).
– Coordinating and implementing international congresses on contemporary research in the Arab world (DAVO Congress, World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies).
– Promoting the spread of knowledge about the Arab World in the general public through publications, lectures and other presentations in the media as well as in seminars at the Institute of Geography, University of Mainz.
