On the riverbanks of the Danube - A European Literature Project

The Danube River connects and separates its inhabitant’s living space. It is a part of their world perceptions over the course of time that forges its numerous identities. Thus its’ attributes varies depending on its geographical topography, social settings and time frame. The Danube as a landscape and habitat often serves as a backdrop for storylines and interpretations. Even in literary work or in films, it is often recreated and being explored. Narrations are attempts to explore and disclose the diversity along the riverbank. With this in mind, this project is being conceived.

The project is sponsored by the ‘Baden-Württemberg Foundation’ within the framework "Perspectives of the Danube: Education, Culture and Civil Society".

It spans from April 2015 till April 2017 and is based on the following four pillars:

1. Thematic Seminars (as well as translation workshop) comprising of students from bordering countries of the Danube River
2. Readings and film presentations
3. Publication of an Anthology
4. Website

Website

The Website “danubylon’’ should serve as a portal for testimonials of human contemplation of the Danube both in text and pictures in the virtual space. It will encompass the transitions of the Danube over time, the differences and similarities of its inhabitants, its conflicts and negotiations. The Danube depicts both harmony and discord, of being understood and also misunderstood.
As the Danubius (known under the Roman Empire) flows through Babylon: the website’s name danubylon is thus chosen.

Cooperation Partner

‘On the Riverbanks of the Danube: A European Literature Project' is a cooperation between the Danube Suevian Institute for History and Regional Geography (IdGL) in Tübingen and the German Institute of Eötvös Lóránd University (ELTE) in Budapest.

This project is facilitated by Dr. habil. Edit Király, lecturer at the German Institute of the ELTE, and by Dr. Olivia Spiridon, Head of the Department of Literature at the Institute of History and Cultural Studies and lecturer at the German Seminar of the University of Tübingen.
Together, the both of us, Edit Király and Olivia Spiridon, have set up this site as a medium of providing information and opening up communication.

An der Donau. Ein europäisches Literaturprojekt

Die Donau verbindet und trennt menschliche Lebensräume, sie ist Teil ihrer Weltvorstellungen und stiftet in ihrem Verlauf zahlreiche Identitäten. Abhängig von ihrer geografischen Beschaffenheit und vom sozialen und zeitlichen Kontext variieren die Bedeutungen, die ihr zugeschrieben werden. Die Donau als Landschaft und Lebensraum ist Kulisse für Handlungen und Sinngebungsprozesse und wird in literarischen und auch filmischen Darstellungen dargestellt, neu erschaffen und problematisiert. Narrationen sind Versuche zur Erschließung und Vermittlung der vielfältigen Welten entlang des Stromes. Davon ging die Konzeption dieses Projekts aus.

Das Projekt wird von der Baden-Württemberg Stiftung im Rahmen des Programms „Perspektive Donau: Bildung, Kultur und Zivilgesellschaft“ gefördert.

Die Webseite danubylon soll Zeugnisse der menschlichen Reflexion über die Donau in Text und Bild in einen virtuellen Raum der Übergänge, Differenzen, Ähnlichkeiten, Konflikte und Aushandlungen zusammenführen. Die Donau ist Eintracht und Zwietracht, Verstehen und Missverständnisse. Danubius fließt durch Babylon: Danubylon wird hiermit ins Leben gerufen.

„An der Donau. Ein europäisches Literaturprojekt“ gründet auf der Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Institut für donauschwäbische Geschichte und Landeskunde (IdGL) in Tübingen und dem Germanistischen Institut der Eötvös Lóránd Universität (ELTE) in Budapest.
Von Seiten der beiden Einrichtungen bearbeiten dieses Projekt Dr. habil. Edit Király, Dozentin am Germanistischen Institut der ELTE, und Dr. Olivia Spiridon, Leiterin des Fachbereichs „Literaturwissenschaft“ am Institut für donauschwäbische Geschichte und Landeskunde und Lehrbeauftragte am Deutschen Seminar der Universität Tübingen.
Wir beide, Edit Király und Olivia Spiridon, setzen mit dieser Webseite auf Wissensvermittlung und Kommunikation.

Thematic Seminars

In April - May 2015 and in April - May 2016, two seminars will be organised. It will be in Kirsoroszi, at the tip of the Szentendre Island, Hungary. It is a place where many well-known authors have worked. Each seminar will last four days. There will be a total of sixty participants (thirty per Seminar). Students will be from bordering countries of the Danube area. Together they will work on either one of the two themes; "The Danube landscape Identity" or "Cities on the Danube." Readings and supplementary materials will be uploaded onto the website prior to the workshop. The lecturers will be Dr. habil. Edit Király and Dr. Olivia Spiridon.
4-day Seminar: Danube Landscape Identity
30. April - 3. May 2015

Rivers play an important role in the roots of a society. As a trade route and a route to wage war, rivers are often intertwined with its economic purposes and history. This is no different for the Danube. However, while other large European rivers, such as the Volga or the Rhine, are often styled as a national landscape; that of the Danube is beyond the authority of one national government. It is a river comprising of different ethnic groups, often even of different empires maybe united or separated. Therefore the Danube served not only as a national identity of different societies and ethnic groups, but also as an emblematic landscape of the region.

The seminar would like to identify key patterns and motives from some of the popular Danube-Literature. And at the same time look into the role the Danube River in the development of both regional and supra-regional identities and how this development changed during the course of the 19th and 20th century.
This 4-day seminar will be held in the picturesque village of Kisoroszi, amid the currents on the northern tip of Szentendre Island where its only link to the ‘outside world’ is by ferry.

Within the framework of this seminar that will be taking place on 30th April 2015, a film presentation by Dr. Marian Tutui from the Institute for Art History "G. Oprescu", Bucharest will be shown.
On the 1st May 2015, a literary evening with the Hungarian writer Gérgely Péterfy will be held. In his novel ‘The Stuffed Barbarian’, the Danube serves as a juncture where ideals and identity is being deliberated and broken.

The seminar is intended as a meeting point for approximately thirty students of German language and literature studies from the Danube river countries.

Thematische Seminare

In den Zeiträumen April - Mai 2015 und April - Mai 2016 werden in der Ortschaft Kisoroszi an der Spitze der Szentendre-Insel – ein Ort, wo viele bekannte Autoren gewirkt haben – zwei Blockseminare mit einer Dauer von vier Tagen organisiert. Teilnehmer sind sechzig (pro Seminar dreißig) Germanistikstudenten aus den Ländern des Donauraums, die gemeinsam die Themen „Identitätslandschaft Donau“ und „Städte an der Donau“ erarbeiten. Reader und Materialien zum Seminar werden im Vorfeld auf der Internetseite des Projekts hochgeladen. Dozentinnen sind Dr. habil. Edit Király und Dr. Olivia Spiridon.


Blockseminar Identitätslandschaft Donau

Flüsse spielen eine wichtige Rolle in der Selbstverortung von Gesellschaften. Als Handelsruten und als Kriegsstraßen sind sie vielfach mit ihrer Ökonomie und ihrer Geschichte verflochten. So auch die Donau. Doch während andere große europäische Flüsse, etwa die Wolga oder der Rhein, oft zu nationalen Landschaften stilisiert wurden, sind die Vorstellungen von der Donau vorwiegend übernational geprägt: ein Fluss, der verschiedene Ethnien, oft sogar verschiedene Imperien miteinander verband oder auch voneinander trennte. Daher diente die Donau nicht nur als eine identitätsstiftende Landschaft verschiedener Gesellschaften und Ethnien, sondern auch als emblematische Landschaft einer Region.
Das Seminar möchte einige für die Identitätsstiftung wichtige Muster und Motive der Donau-Literatur herausarbeiten sowie den Fragen nachgehen, welche Rolle die Donau bei der Herausbildung regionaler wie überregionaler Identitäten spielte und wie sich diese im Laufe des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts veränderten.
Das Blockseminar findet im malerischen Dorf Kisoroszi statt, das mitten im Strom auf der nördlichsten Spitze der Szentendre-Insel liegt und mit der Außenwelt mit einer Fähre verbunden ist.

Im Rahmen des Blockseminars findet am 30. April 2015 eine Filmpräsentation von Dr. Marian Tutui vom Institut für Kunstgeschichte „G. Oprescu“ in Bukarest statt.
Am 1. Mai veranstalten wir einen literarischen Abend mit dem ungarischen Schriftsteller Gergely Péterfy. In seinem Roman Der ausgestopfte Barbare dient die Donau als Schnittstelle, an der sich Ideale wie Identitäten reflektieren und brechen.

Das Blockseminar ist als Treffpunkt für etwa dreißig Studierende der Germanistik gedacht, die aus den Donauländern stammen.
