EEP Giant Otter

The EEP is the most intensive type of population management for an endangered species kept in EAZA (European Association of Zoos and Aquaria) zoos. Each EEP has a coordinator who is responsible for data collection and breeding recommendations. Moreover he/she is in charge of evaluating potential new holders and facilities. A Species Committee assists the species coordinator in decision finding. The species coordinator for Giant Otters is based at Zoo Schwerin and all otter-holding institutions are represented in the species committee.
Currently (October 2015), about 65 individuals live in 19 institutions in 10 European countries (+ Singapore) coordinated by the EEP:
