Funke Design

Hello, my name is Holger Funke.

I am a furniture craftsman specialising in unique furniture made from solid wood.
I create furniture for homes, schools and kindergartens.

Originally from Germany, I qualified as a cabinet maker in Dresden and then went on to further my education, gaining a degree in wood Design and Technology at the Hamburg University of Applied Science.

I moved to New Zealand in 2005, and after working for one of the large national construction companies, it wasn't long before I realised I had to follow my passion of making unique, high quality handmade furniture.

UNIQUE DESIGN

I have a fairly unique design aesthetic, definitely rustic, yet not rugged and chunky.


There are not many straight lines in nature, I think my furniture reflects the organic curves nature creates, finished to a high standard with great attention to detail.

TIMBER

My workshop is based at Tauriko Sawmill near Tauranga, so I have excellent access to a range of timbers, mainly Macrocarpa, Lawson Cypress, Redwood and Eucalyptus (Gum) although I can source any timber you require.

I make a lot of furniture with Macrocarpa, it's a fantastic timber, popular for both indoor and outdoor use. Outside and above the ground Macrocarpa is naturally equivalent to H3 pine in durability, but without all the nasty chemicals. It has an attractive grain and rich colour.
