One Cut One Bow

We are Magdalen Chua and Ryotaro Hoshino, co-translators of art related texts from Japanese to English.

We started One Cut One Bow in Glasgow in 2012 to share our (still ongoing) project of co-translating Ryunosuke Akutagawa's "A Pygmy's Proverbs" (1923) from Japanese to English. After spending a year and a half in Tokyo/Yokohama, we moved to Leipzig in 2015 and did a year long project interviewing Japanese artists.

We began offering our Japanese to English translation, editing, and writing services to artists in 2016.

For all texts, Ryo does a translation from Japanese to English, Mag edits the text, and we then discuss the text line by line to ensure that the translation conveys the essence of the text in a natural way.

One Cut One Bow is collaborating with Good & Cheap Translators to offer art translation between English and German.

我々、マグダレン・チュアと星野遼太郎は美術文献の共同翻訳（日→英）を行っています。

2012年にグラスゴー（英）で始めた芥川龍之介の『侏儒の言葉（1923年）』の共同翻訳プロジェクト（現在も継続中）の成果を多くの方に楽しんでいただくために始めたOne Cut One Bow。横浜に一年半滞在した後、2015年にライプチヒ（独）に移住、この地では日本人アーティストをインタビューするプロジェクトを一年間行いました。

2016年からは日→英翻訳、編集、執筆サービスをアーティストの方々に提供させていただいています。

どのような文章を取り扱う際も、翻訳文が原文のエッセンスを捉え、かつ自然に読めるものとなるよう、まず星野が日→英の翻訳を行い、チュアがこれを編集、その後二人でこれを一文ずつディスカッションしていくというプロセスを踏んでいます。
