Die Rudergesellschaft Heidelberg wurde am 04. Juni im Jahre 1898 gegründet. Der Legende nach suchten die Ruderer später einen Ersatzsport, da im Winter auf dem zugefrorenen Neckar kein Rudern möglich war. So wurde im Jahre 1919 schließlich die Rugbyabteilung gegründet.

In den folgenden Jahren entstand ein reger Spielverkehr mit holländischen Mannschaften. Dieser kam durch Buren aus Südafrika zustande, die in Heidelberg studierten und sich der RGH angeschlossen hatten. Inspiriert durch die Gegner aus Holland tauschten die Spieler schließlich ihre schwarzen Trikots gegen das heute noch gebräuchliche Orange ein.

Mittlerweile hat die RGH die erfolgreichste Jugendabteilung Deutschlands mit über 40 Titeln im Schüler- und Jugendbereich aus der auch stets zahlreiche Nationalspieler hervorgehen. Bekanntestes „Produkt“ der RGH-Jugendabteilung war der mehrmalige englische Nationalspieler Philip Christophers.

1980 schließlich konnte die erste Deutsche Meisterschaft der Herren errungen werden. Von 1995 bis 2008 durchlebte die RGH mit 3 Meistertiteln, 3 Pokalsiegen und 6 Meistertiteln im 7er Rugby ihre bislang erfolgreichste Zeit.

Seit 1996 trägt die RGH ihre Heimspiele im Fritz-Grunebaum-Sportpark aus. Hier werden neben dem alltäglichen Liga- , Jugend und Trainingsbetrieb auch zahlreiche Länderspiele und nationale wie internationale Turniere ausgetragen.




The RG Heidelberg was formed on 4 June 1898 as a rowing club. Out of necessity to have an alternative sport during the winter as forzen rivers made rowing naturally impossible, the rugby department of the club was formed in 1919.

Due to many South Africans who were studying in Heidelberg the club developed a good relationship with Dutch teams and eventually the Dutch national colours, orange, became RGH's team colours which they still are today.

In 1980, the team finally won its first German national championship title, followed by another three in 1997, 2006 and 2007. While the club managed to upset favourites SC 1880 Frankfurt in the 2007 final - the nickname "Orange Hearts" was born. One year later the RGH finished as runners-up, this time falling short to Frankfurt in the final. After this, the club reached the semi-final stage of the German championship a couple of times as it last was the case in the 2012-13 season.

Also, 7s Rugby has a long and successful history at RGH with numerous German national championship titles and a large number of current German 7s internationals on our squad.

Since 1996 the Fritz-Grunebaum-Sportpark in the district of Kirchheim in the south of Heidelberg is the current home ground of the RGH, that is also referred to as „Orange Hearts“ due to the colours of the club.

RG Heidelberg is the only club to have belonged to the Rugby-Bundesliga in every season since its initiation. It is known for developing up-and-coming talents and youth players with former England international Philip Christophers being the most noted. The youth department of the RGH is the most successuful in Germany with over 40 German national titles.
