Als der Wuppertaler Intendant Arno Wüstenhöfer Pina Bausch zur Spielzeit 1973/74 als Choreographin verpflichtet, benennt sie das Ensemble schon bald in Tanztheater Wuppertal um. Unter diesem Namen erlangt die Kompanie, obwohl anfänglich umstritten, mit den Jahren Weltgeltung.
36 Jahre lang war Pina Bausch das künstlerische Zentrum des Tanztheater Wuppertal. In ihrem ‚Tanztheater’ war alles anders als im klassischen Ballett: von Beginn an zeigten sich die Tänzer*innen als charaktervolle Individuen, die ihre Geschichten tanzend, singend und sprechend preisgaben. Was als Revolution in Wuppertal begann, hat mit seiner ästhetischen und thematischen Zeitlosigkeit die Entwicklung der Theaterkunst sowie des klassischen und modernen Tanzes nachhaltig geprägt. Insgesamt 46 Stücke schuf Pina Bausch, ein Großteil davon zählt heute zum Repertoire des Tanztheater Wuppertal.
Auf Einladung internationaler Partner entstanden zahlreiche Koproduktionen mit anderen Ländern.
Das international besetzte Ensemble mit 37 Tänzer*innen verschiedener Kulturen und Tänzergenerationen bestreitet neben den Aufführungen in Wuppertal jährlich zahlreiche Auslandsgastspiele.
Das Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch tourte bisher in 38 Länder.
Es wird geleitet von der Intendantin und Künstlerischen Leiterin Adolphe Binder und dem Geschäftsführer Dirk Hesse.

Pina Bausch: Geboren 1940 in Solingen, gestorben 2009 in Wuppertal, erhält ihre Tanzausbildung an der Essener Folkwang­ Hochschule unter Leitung von Kurt Jooss. Hier erlernt sie eine exzellente Tanztechnik, die sie an der Julliard School in New York noch verfeinert.

Soon after the director of Wuppertal‘s theatres, Arno Wüstenhöfer, engaged Pina Bausch as choreographer in 1973, she renamed the ensemble the Tanztheater Wuppertal. Under this name, although controversial at the beginning, the company gradually achieved international recognition.
For thirty-six years Pina Bausch was the creative nucleus of the Tanztheater Wuppertal. Her ‘dance theatre’ was completely different from classical ballet: right from the start the dancers exposed themselves as individual characters, revealing their stories by dancing, singing and talking. What began as a revolution in Wuppertal permanently altered the development of performing arts, including both classical and modern dance, with its thematic and aesthetic timelessness.
Pina Bausch created a total of forty-six pieces before her death in 2009, the majority of them are part of the Tanztheater Wuppertal repertoire today. The company is international, with thirty-seven dancers, from various cultures and dance generations, undertaking countless performances and tours abroad along with the performances in Wuppertal.
On the invitation of international partners, many co-productions were created with other countries. The Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch has toured in a total of thirty-eight countries to date.
Intendant and Artistic Director is Adolphe Binder, Managing director Dirk Hesse.

Pina Bausch was born 1940 in Solingen and died 2009 in Wuppertal. She received her dance training at the Folkwang School in Essen under Kurt Jooss and the Julliard School in New York, where she achieved technical excellence.
