More about Twegatte.org

[English Below]

Vores objektiver inkluderer blandt andet

The idea of starting up this organization was initiated by a lady called Nalubega Rehema, a Ugandan and Danish citizen and she currently resides in Denmark. The whole goal of this organization is to help people back in Uganda improve or and upgrade their welfare status in the society, there by alleviating people from all sorts of poverty.

Our objectives include among others

1. Improve social and physical welfare of individuals in selected risk-zones

Social services have always been an important factor into improving the status of any community. This includes both in support of already established institutes or help upgrade the living standards in genera. Provide clean running water in rural areas as well as improvements in all types of water supplies. We are hoping to focus on drilling wells, protecting springs, replacing and repairing pumps and training community workers to oversee water systems.
People usually walk several kilometers to carry water to their homes which is at times severely less hygienic.
Although it’s an expensive venture, we hope to encourage building sewage networks. We believe that through education and encouragement, we can help people learn on the dangers of poor sewage management as well as how to treat it so that it’s not a hazard to the rest of the community.

2. Prevent underage girl-marriage as well as their education

Nearly one in every two girls in Uganda is married before the age of 18. This is often a result of poverty, limited access to education for girls and traditional and social norms which dictate that girls are married at a young age in order to fulfil their role as a wife and a mother.
On the 16th of June 2015, the government of Uganda launched its first ever national strategy to end both child marriage and teenage pregnancy, which was developed in partnership with civil society organizations, including Girls Not Brides and UN agencies and the strategy is a five year plan aimed to create a society free from child marriages and teenage pregnancy.
We at Twegatte hope to add weight in those efforts by;
• Introducing a case-by-girl scheme to our potential donors and well-wishers. Here, we hope to document all girls that we assume are in risk zones of not being educated and let our well-wishers select on a girl or a group of them to sponsor in their education or give them basic skills to survive on their own.
• Open up seminars or a one-to-one talk with parents in rural areas and local leaders on the hazards of neglecting girl education as well as marrying them off at such a tender age.
• Study and evaluate how to improve girls’ education in a number of schools as well as talk to heads of schools on how they can improve girl education.
• Empower the girls that are already in school not to drop out, give them all the basic support that will deemed to be suitable.

3. Improve child-education

The system of education in Uganda has a structure of 7 years of primary education, 6 years of secondary education (divided into 4 years of lover secondary and 2 years of upper secondary), and 3-5 years of post-secondary education. The present system has existed since the early 1960’s. However, some other areas of input are needed to cater for the children at the highest risk of not being included in the system.

4. Improve on health and sanitation

Sanitation remains one of the key health issues and challenges in Uganda. Many people lack access to adequate sanitation facilities, propagating disease and high rate of child death (1.5 million deaths annually).
Uganda’s population is estimated 34.5 million people, according to the Uganda National Bureau of Statistics (UNBS). The bureau states that the national average toilet coverage is at around 80% (almost 8 homes out of every 10) in urban areas, 60% (6 homes out of every 10) in rural areas and about 40% (4 homes out of every 10) in slums.
According to health experts, poor toilet practices result in the spread of preventable diseases like diarrhea, cholera and dysentery. All these diseases break out as a result of poor disposal of human excreta.
In order to tackle this problem, we at Twegatte hope to encourage people in washing their hands every after a toilet use. This has been proven by health experts to decrease the risk of contracting diseases by up to 60%. We hope to educate people about this phenomena and provide bars of soap to different communities to encourage them wash their hands thoroughly after every toilet visit.
We also hope to help build toilets for communities where it will deemed to be necessary.

5. Provide market for locally made products

We realize that Uganda being a country with a lot of art, culture and agricultural at the same time, a lot of products made by local entrepreneurs don’t make it through to the international audience. These local entrepreneurs, we realize, have a fantastic products that we think that can create the same attention internationally as they do locally. In this regard, being that these entrepreneurs don’t have access to online mega shopping stores like E-Bay or Amazon, we hope to open an online store where our visitors can browse through to find lots and lots of ready-to-buy products. We hope to not only help these products be sold but also promote local artistry, improve talent as well as help them get good income.

6. Provide skills for self-survival

Perhaps the most important objective, we feel the best way to improve people’s welfare is to give them skills or the help needed to kick-start their ability to help themselves, especially in the absence of Twegatte. Ugandans are knows to major in agriculture and therefore we hope for example, if one has a piece of land, we help them develop it or propose the best crops to cultivate on it based on the world demand. Crops like maize, beans or cassava can be a good source of income to the farmer when harvested. Another variation could possibly be like providing livestock: two goats or a cow or chicks can alleviate a whole family or even a community from poverty and improve their welfare altogether.
